Io eclipse on Jupiter witnessed by NASA’s Juno mission

Lady luck was on the side of NASA’s Juno spacecraft when Jupiter’s volcanic moon Io skirted between the Sun and the gas giant last September 11.

In its 22nd skim over the largest planet in the Solar System, the spacecraft was able to take various snaps of Io’s massive shadow cast over the Jupiter’s surface. read more

ASTEROID 2012 TC4 CLOSE FLY-BY

On October 11-12, 2017, a tiny near-Earth object (NEO) swept very close to Earth. Designated with the name 2012 TC4, this 15-30 meter wide asteroid (comparable to the 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor) flew by nearEarth at around 11% the Earth-Moon distance. Specifically, it made its close encounter with Earth at about 44,000 kilometers above Antarctica at 9:42AM, UAE Local Time. Fortunately, it did not hit Earth thanks to its gravity deflecting the asteroid’s trajectory away from Earth around its orbit.

PERSEIDS METEOR SHOWER 2017

On the evening of 12th of August 12 until dawn of August 13, there will be an annual event that will light up the sky, Perseid Meteor Shower.

The Perseid Meteor Shower is one of the brighter meteor showers of the year and it occurs every year between July 17 and August 24. However, the peak date when the most meteors will streak across the sky will fall on the late evening hours of August 12 until dawn of August 13. read more
